Description

Experience the innovative interface of the Touch Bar in the late 2016 silver Apple 15.4" MacBook Pro with Touch Bar.

The Touch Bar places controls right at your fingertips and adapts to different apps to provide useful functions without having to navigate complex menus or memorize keyboard shortcuts. Replacing the function keys in the top row of the keyboard, the Touch Bar features a Retina-quality display and supports multi-touch input.

The power button has been upgraded with a Touch ID sensor, so you can quickly log into your MacBook Pro using your fingerprint. You can also use Touch ID to make purchases over the web, thanks to Apple Pay. Touch ID enables a quick, accurate reading of your fingerprint and uses sophisticated algorithms to recognize and match it with the Secure Enclave in the Apple T1 chip.

The system features a 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7 quad-core processor, 16GB of 2133 MHz LPDDR3 onboard memory, a 1TB PCIe-based SSD, four Thunderbolt 3 (USB Type-C) ports, a 50% larger Force Touch trackpad, a keyboard with a 2nd-gen butterfly mechanism, stereo speakers with double the dynamic range of its predecessor as well as improved bass, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2 wireless technology, and even a 3.5mm headphone jack. macOS Sierra is the installed operating system.

Please note that this Mac may come with an earlier version of macOS. You can upgrade to the latest version through the Mac App Store app.

The multi-touch, Retina-quality display changes automatically based on what you're doing, from showing traditional system controls, such as volume and brightness, to more directly interacting with or browsing through content. Intelligent typing features like emoji and predictive text improve the typing experience, and you'll be able to customize the Touch Bar to fit your needs. The Touch Bar can also adapt to apps, such as Mail, Safari, Messages, and even third-party apps like Adobe Photoshop, so you'll have access to useful functions previously hidden in menus.Touch IDA Touch ID sensor has been integrated into the power button, so you can quickly log into your account, even when another user is logged in. I have been an 11" MacBook Air user for the past 6 years, and have been extremely happy with the design. I moved up to the 15" MacBook Pro because I have started 3D game development in Unity, and need the higher resolution screen, as well as the discrete GPU and the extra two CPU cores for our game's CPU-heavy physics simulation.

In every way except for the CPU, GPU, and the big screen, the 15" MacBook Pro is a step backward from the 11" MacBook Air:

1. The keyboard travel is too short. The keys are frustrating to press.
2. The Touch Bar is worse than useless. I never intentionally use it because there is no tactical feedback. Worse, I find myself accidentally tapping the invisible "buttons" on the touch bar that perform unexpected actions, like hitting the "back" button in Chrome, losing my place on a webpage, or hitting the "Siri" button, forcing Siri to pop up when I don't want it.
3. The Force Touch trackpad is carpal tunnel-inducing. I really struggle with it. As someone who regularly spends 16 hours a day on my laptop, I the lack of physical depression means I push harder to achieve the effect, causing strain on the muscles and tendons along the back of my hands. I now use a mouse, which takes up significantly more desk space. I never had a problem with the trackpad on the 11" MacBook Air after 16 hours of use.
4. The lack of real ports means that I am forced to carry and attach things to the side of my computer in order to hook up a (mandatory because of #3 above) external mouse, an SD card, and a USB drive.
5. I had to purchase an aftermarket equivalent to MagSafe. MagSafe has saved my 11" MacBook Air on countless occasions, and getting rid of it was an unwise choice.

I bought this computer to replace my Late 2011 Macbook Pro.
Upon opening the shiny, perfect, Apple packaging I was gutted to discover the battery was dead on arrival and would not charge.
So after taking it to Apple Genius Bar to verify, indeed - the battery was dead and failed the diagnostic.
So I exchange it with B&H which was painless but cost me a week of time to wait for the new machine.
Now I open the new machine and.. the left shift key consistently does not activate when pressed.
After reading the other reviews on this machine it seems either B&H got a batch of lemons or the entire 2016 production run is full of lemons.
I'm contemplating returning it. I don't know if I want to risk another exchange and another lemon.
I also don't know if I want to stay with Apple after this experience.
